The Kinks - Berkeley Mews - 2016
Berkeley Mews was first released on The Kinks album Then, Now And Inbetween, then later on The Kink Kronikles. From liner notes of The Kink Kronikles -"Berkeley Mews describes Ray's unpleasant confrontation with a bogus intellectual and rocks as authoritatively as any Kinks track of the last five years, with (presumably) Nicky Hopkins on harpsichord." Bold, gutsy guitar riffs from Dave Davies. It sounds as if Dave Davies is picking notes with a switchblade in this song. Heavy bass lines from Pete Quaife.
- stereo mix, recorded early 1968 at Pye Studios (No. 2), London

Berkeley Mews
The leaves of brown came falling through the view,
In Berkeley Mews, I first met you,
I staggered through your chilly dining room,
In Berkeley Mews, I first met you.
Your kitchen sink was cluttered up,
So I put the shutter up forlornly
I brewed another cuppa up
And tried to sneak out early in the morning.
I thought you had much better things to do,
In Berkeley Mews, I first met you,
Drowned my conversation with champagne,
In Berkeley Mews, was not listening.
I thought you were an intellect,
But now that I reflect, you left me reeling.
You made me drink a toast
And when you finished I was looking at the ceiling.
The floods of tears I've wept thinking of you,
Remind me of that night in Berkeley Mews.
You know that you left me broken hearted,
In Berkeley Mews.

Absolutely great! Love the rhythm.
ReplyDeleteA great Berkeley Mews tribute by the great BerkeleyMews7. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteProbabley one of the most underrated songs of all time.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite kinks tracks. Love the change. The whole song is so catchy! Dig that honky tonk piano too!

ReplyDeleteGod, this song is amazing. The way it goes back and forth with the trilly sort of piano bits and then the boogie-wooogie part kicks in, and Ray's singing is fantastic.
ReplyDeleteWe got into the Kinks in Philly in about 1983. This is one of the best compilations in history. They were so dirty in the streets kids, just like us.
ReplyDeleteI first heard Berekely Mews as the B side of the blue label PYE single Lola that I got in 1970 in Canada. We had a jukebox in the cafeteria in my highschool and we would play that song a lot. I love this rocker and that great ending sax lick - nice sleasy boogie, Ray's vocals are superb. I think Ray was finished working with Shel Talmy before 1968, as he started producing the Kinks LPS in 1966 with Face to Face and Talmy is only the engineer, then Ray took over production totally with Something Else from 1967.....
